By Arlene Lormestoire

Here at Mission: Restore, we’re proud to welcome our new 2016 summer interns! Our diverse crew is ready to learn and grow as individuals and a team. We can’t wait to see what they’ll learn and create this summer. Learn more about them through their interviews below!

Ciara

Hometown: Baldwin, New York
School: New York University
Major/Academic Focus: Major in Politics with a doule minor in Religious Studies and Classical Civilizations – Hoping to continue on to law school!

What area of Mission: Restore are you working in?
I am excited to say I was recently made President of Mission: Restore’s wonderful Young Professionals Board! I am so excited to transition into this role and help our already amazing Young Professionals Board grow. This summer, I will begin planning our annual gala for this October. Exciting news- we have decided to host our annual event at the beautiful New York City Fire Museum! More details to follow!

What are you most excited for this summer at Mission: Restore?
I am so excited to plan the amazing fall event. The event is coming into fruition more and more everyday and I cannot wait to see the final product this October. Also, I love spending time in the Mission: Restore office with my wonderful colleagues!

Name a superpower you have.
My superpower would have to be my ability to dance shamelessly! I believe in having fun whenever possible- even if that means dancing a bit to get the creative juices flowing!

Make a daring prediction for this summer!
The Mission: Restore team will go to to Chipotle so many times, they begin to know us by our first names and our orders without any communication! That’s daring for our stomachs!

Alex

School: Washington University in St. Louis
Major/Academic Focus: Global Health, Healthcare Management

What part of Mission: Restore are you working in this summer?
Summer Intern: Fundraising and Donor Development.

What are you looking forward to this summer at Mission: Restore?
I really want to see Mission: Restore succeed in bringing the world closer together by showing that everyone has the right to the highest attainable standard of healthcare. Their altruistic motives and pervasive desire to do good in the world has gone far beyond our offices and has reached to the far ends of the most desperate countries. Our recent trip this summer is just one of the many ways Mission: Restore is trying to bridge the gap between the quality of medical training and healthcare around the world.

Tell us a superpower that you have.
I can talk and walk backwards at the same time.

It’s going to be hot!

Stephanie

Hometown: Southern California
School: Columbia University
Major/Academic Focus: Public Health and International Affairs

What part of Mission: Restore are you working in this summer?
I work in storytelling and graphic design. The global surgical gap is a critical but, at times, complex challenge to discuss, and I like to make it comprehensible to a wider audience through writing and through visuals.

What are you enthusiastic for this summer at Mission: Restore?
I’m excited for our East Africa Regional Training in Nairobi. So much about our work is mobilizing resources to foster an environment for networks to grow, and I think that the potential that this event has for connecting talented surgeons from across several countries is enormous. In addition to the technical training that will happen, I am excited to hear about how the participants stay in contact and reach out to one another as colleagues and for support.

Disclose one of your superpowers.
I can drink several cups of coffee before bed and sleep like a baby.

Everybody I love survives this season of Game of Thrones.

What are you pumped for this summer at Mission: Restore?
To learn how a non-profit runs, I hope to one day start my own!

Reveal a superpower you have.
I wish I were a real witch and could fly, but I’ll settle for being a Harry Potter aficionado.
