Traumatic injuries, often life-threatening and debilitating, are a global health epidemic in need of immediate and skilled medical attention. However, the harsh reality is that in many developing countries, doctors often lack the necessary skills, resources, and support to adequately address these critical healthcare needs. Mission: Restore offers the much-needed surgical training doctors need to care for their patients in underserved, low-income countries.
The Global
Surgical Care Gap
Traumatic injuries are alarmingly prevalent, affecting millions of people worldwide. Shockingly, an estimated 5 billion people, a significant portion of the global population, lack access to essential surgical care when faced with traumatic injuries or other surgical conditions.
Every year, over 50 million traumatic injuries occur across the globe. Over 90% of these traumatic injuries occur in low- and middle-income countries, where healthcare resources are often limited. The consequences of this healthcare disparity are dire, with more than 5 million people succumbing to traumatic injuries annually, surpassing the combined number of deaths from HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.
The enormity of this challenge becomes evident when we recognize that surgical care is indispensable. Approximately 30% of the global burden of disease necessitates surgeries, yet the poorest one-third of the world’s population receives only 6% of the surgeries performed worldwide. This underscores the urgency of bridging the gap in surgical care by offering doctors the tools, education, and support they need to care for their communities.
