The East Africa Regional Training took place in Mombasa, Kenya on June 19-21, 2017. The event was put on in partnership with Coast General Hospital, Smile Train, and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), and was made possible thanks to our sponsors: Smile Train, Acelity, Allergan Foundation, GSM Systems, Sientra and Smith & Nephew.
70 participants from 11 different countries across East Africa came together to complete 27 hours of training. Of those present, 21 were women participants. The three-day long training was led by expert surgeon trainers, Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh, MD, FACS, Dr. Sol Mundinger, MD, and Dr. Andrew Hodges, MD.
Together, surgeon trainers and participants explored surgical techniques on skin grafts, flaps, wound management, and cleft care through lectures, panel discussions, in-theater operative case observations, interactive discussions, and case studies. In addition to addressing surgical skill sets, sessions also focused on larger discussions of hospital systems management, professional development, and measuring patient outcomes.
