Mwanza, Tanzania (November 2018)

In November 2018 during the surgical training trip to Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza Tanzania, Mission: Restore met five-year-old Adimu Kigosi. Two years prior, she had been terribly burned after falling into a pot of boiling water, severely burning her entire right arm and hand.
Local healthcare providers were unable to provide adequate care for her burns. As a result, Adimu Kigosi developed debilitating burn contractures making it impossible for her to use her hands.

But Dr. Peter Biribwa , Mission: Restore’s lead surgeon was able to surgically repair the contractures on her hands and elbow in 2018 releasing the contractures. The surgery and carefully planned physical therapy through Mission Restore returned Adimu Kigosi’s ability to use her arm freely.

She is now able to play with her friends without pain or restriction. Today, Adimu Kigosi is in school and doing well. The local medical team led by Mission: Restore’s educational grantee Dr. Phillip Makoye will stay in touch and provide the care she needs to keep improving. Mission Restore continues its work to build year-round surgical access by training local medical professionals and providing surgical care.
